About Darling Range
Darling Range Dexter stud was founded by Rose and Matthew Stevens and our son Ben in 2005.
We were originally located next to the Darling Ranges in Harvey WA but an increasing addiction to Dexter cattle forced us to move to a larger property in Balmattum near Euroa Victoria Australia. We started off by buying a few unregistered Dexter's but we were soon hooked with the Dexter bug and sold our unregistered Dexter’s to buy quality genetics of Kirup Park, Rawlings and Billabong.
Dexter's are a naturally small Irish heritage breed that is about two thirds of the size of normal cattle and they are generally quiet and gentle. They were a rare and endangered breed with the rare breeds trust that through many breeders' effort and great expense to become the popular breed it is today with small land holders and an attractive option for people who want to produce their own food. They are good cattle for good people.
The love of Dexter's creeps up on you until one day you realise there is no turning back and sometimes you find yourself turning down social events to hang out with your cows.
As a registered breeder and part of the Dexter Cattle Australia Incorporated we work together with other registered breeders to advance the breed as a whole for future generations. It is our aim in the interest of the breed to improve the breed through each generation. We take pride in our animals and enjoy our social events and our Magazine. Each year when we choose names for our calves we have a letter of the year and we have fun making up names for our cattle to these letters this makes it easy while out in the paddock to know what year the animal was born. 2011 is the G year so we have names like Guinness Mist and Gem Stone 2012 is the H year and hot contenders will no doubt have reference to heat [for the red girls and boys].
